Come and be part of the Bhutan International Marathon, 2025 – the wonderful annual event that sees runners come from all over the world. This is a great opportunity for runners to experience Bhutan and how locals enjoy and celebrate running lifestyles while at the same time experience Bhutan in a very intimate way. Runners will experience the main cultural attractions designed also to make you acclimatized to the altitude here before the marathon. Combined with a gentle country stroll, or the breath-taking landscape and the monumental fortresses, the living culture of the people in their traditional costumes or the enchanting folklore and history – this running holiday will usher you to experience Bhutan like no other trip can offer.

Day 1-Welcome to Bhutan - Arrival

Tuesday - 25th of February 2025 @

Hotel Thimphu Towers

The flight into Bhutan takes you close to the great Himalayas; offering dazzling scenic views of world’s highest glacial peaks where you’ll be greeted by views of Mt.Everest and Mt.Kanchenjunga, and our very own Mt.Jomolhari and Mt. Jichu Drakey. As your flight descends into Paro valley, you’ll get your first impressions of Bhutan - forested hills; silvery Pa chu (Paro river) meandering down the valley below the idyllic Paro Dzong (fortress) located atop a hill overlooking the valley. Upon arrival you’ll be received by our friendly professional guide who will help you settle into your comfortable vehicle, and then proceed to the capital city Thimphu for a hour’s drive. Enroute stop to visit the Tamchog Lhakang monastery for a breath of fresh mountain air and marvel at the iron bridge reconstructed using original chain links from the 13th century bridge. On arrival you will be taken to your hotel for a check-in and short rest . In the evening, if time permits visit the Memorial Chorten Stupa which is a sacred shrine built in the memory of third king of Bhutan. You will enjoy welcome dinner in a nice local restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Bhutanese cuisines. Overnight in the resort.

Day 2-Easy Exploration around the capital city Thimphu.

Wednesday - 26th of February 2025 @

After breakfast, drive to Kuensel Phodrang where the gigantic 169ft statue of Buddha Dordenma sits overlooking the valley. Enjoy a panoramic view of Thimphu city from there. From here we’ll enjoy a lovely easy hike on one of the capital town’s favourite hiking trails to start flexing your leg muscles for a great start to your Bhutan holiday. The hike of 6 km easy paced brings you to the Changangkha temple. Head to town to one of Thimphu’s favourite café for a healthy lunch. While the food is great, its also a window to see the ways of the urban townfolk of Bhutan. After lunch visit some of the cultural treasures of the capital – the Folk Heritage museum – which is a 19th century traditional Bhutanese farmhouse which provides glimpses of the Bhutanese lifestyle, the Royal Textile Museum and Academy that showcases Bhutan’s rich and famous textiles and see how local weavers are trained to make complex designs etc. Finish the day by strolling around the Crafts Bazaar, along the streets of Thimphu which sells and displays various handicrafts and textiles made entirely in Bhutan. Weekend is a time for shopping so we’ll drive to the Centenial market and Kaja Thorm markets to delve right into the Bhutanese way of life and walk past various venders selling local vegetables and fruits that make up the Bhutanese culinary. This is place where locals come and spend time enjoying meals and also there are some live music shows entertaining onlookers for a nice weekend timepass.

Day 3-Hike on Trans-Bhutan Heritage Trail to Punakha

Thursday - 27th of February 2025 @

After breakfast, drive to Dochula Pass (3140m). Situated atop the pass at the backdrop of fluttering prayer flags is the Druk Wangyal Chortens, a collection of 108 chortens (stupas) that was built to exemplify the greatness of the Fourth King. Start on an easy descending hike on the Trans-Bhutan Trail – (an old heritage trail that was revived recently) starting from Lamperi descending to Thinleygang village. This trail goes through dense old forests that is good for birds and rhododendrons while passing through scenic villages. After a picnic lunch, descend to the low-lying rice valley of Lobesa and pay your respects to one of Bhutan’s most charming and eccentric historic figures nicknamed ‘The Divine Madman’ at the Chhimi Lhakhang – also called the fertility monastery - our guide will explain the entire story about it. The visit involves a short nice hike through a beautiful village surrounded by paddy fields. Stay in a cozy resort overlooking the valley. Drive time 2 hours.

Day 4-Punakha Sightseeing and rest day

Friday - 28th of February 2025 @

Start with a short hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal stupa, which involves a short scenic hike through paddy fields for about 45 minutes till the hilltop where the temple is located. From here you can also enjoy a majestic view of the underlying valley. The temple itself is a splendid example of Bhutan’s fine architectural and artistic traditions and the only one of its kind in the world. From here you can optionally take another great hike from the riverside crossing a suspension bridge to other side of the Mo Chu river for approximately 3 km with hours hiking. A picnic lunch is served on the banks of the Punakha river. Here you’ll probably see locals enjoying a game of archery – the national sport of Bhutan. Continue to Punakha Dzong – the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan situated at the confluence of two rivers. This ancient fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s leadership and still serves as the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. The fortress is a fine example of Bhutan’s rich art and architecture, and our guide who is an expert in iconography will explain all aspects of art, architecture, history, and its significance. Proceed to Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery which is atop a ridge amid pine trees and overlooking the valleys of Punakha and Wangduephodrang. Interact with the nuns and they love to speak English with visitors and learn about the ways of the world.

Day 5-Bhutan International Marathon

Saturday - 1st of March 2025 @

Metta Resort or Khangkhu Resort

After a nice breakfast, Participate in the Half a Marathon. The route is mostly rural and approximately 50% on hard pack dirt and 50% on pavement. The marathon will start at 8:00 AM. The elevation at the start line is 6700 feet. We recommend you wear warm clothing over your running clothing and bring any other personal items you might need. These will be transported for you back to the finish line. Do not bring any valuables to the start line. From the start line runners will descend into a few shallow rollers before the course mostly flattens out while proceeding toward Punakha. The route follows the Mo Chhu (river) through rural Punakha Valley. After leaving the rain forest area the valley will open up and you will have stunning views of the Khamsum Yulley Temple, monasteries, rice paddies, rain forest, villages and Chortens. Route is mostly rural and approximately 50% on hard pack dirt with some rocky and uneven surfaces and 50% on pavement.. The terrain is flat to rolling with many gradual down hill sections and with an overall elevation loss of over 1000 feet. Approximately .5 mi (.8 km) before reaching the Punakha Dzong, runners will turn left off the main road, cross a bridge onto a paved road and then and take a hard pack dirt track through a small village bypassing the cremation site. At the cremation site you will have approximately 7 miles (11.27 kms) to go to the finish line. You will climb over a cattle barrier then up a short hill, before crossing a stunning 300 foot long suspension bridge across the Pho Chhu. Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the view! This is a very stable suspension bridge and quite runnable. You’ll descend a short steep hill off the bridge area before continuing on hard pack dirt for about 3 miles (4.8 kms) while following the Puna Tsang Chhu south from the suspension bridge. You’ll reach your last aid station on the course just before before turning into pavement for the remainder of the event. Runners will then cross the Puna Tsang Chhu on a standard vehicle bridge and head north back toward Punakha Dzong via Khuruthang town and past the Khuruthang Monastery and Chorten. The finish is at the picturesque Punakha Dzong. Runners must reach the Pho Chhu suspension bridge (18.6 miles/30 kms) by 1:30 PM and the finish line by 3:00 PM. Drive to Paro in the afternoon after with a sense of accomplishment. Visit a farmhouse to soak in an herbal hot-stone bath which is known to be therapeutic and a perfect way to soothe your feet and body after the run. Enjoy a nice authetic Bhutanese dinner at the farmhouse and experience our way of life.This is a complimentary value-added experience from Bhutan Travel Club without any hidden costs. Goes perfectly with some pints of locally brewed Red Panda Beer and if you are fine why not try a hand in archery too! Proceed to your resort in the evening. Drive time 3 hours.

Day 6-Tiger’s Nest excursion and Paro sightseeing

Sunday - 2nd of March 2025 @

Today you’ll experience Bhutan’s most valued attractions, and perhaps the biggest highlight for your trip! An excursion to the famous Taktshang monastery -translated as- Tiger’s nest monastery is also a good way to acclimatize before you start trekking. The temple was built in 1692 by a prominent historical figure named Gyaltse Tenzin Rabgye whose reincarnation is now a young teenager and already a prominent figure in the clergy. Your guide will complement the experience with its story. On the way back visit the ruins of Drugyal Dzong fortress, which is an important Bhutanese heritage as it served as a strategic watchtower and a fortress that helped repel numerous Tibetan invasions in the 1600s. Peak of Jumolhari ‘Mountain of the Goddess’ can be seen on a clear day from here (7,329 mts/24,029 ft.). Visit Kyichu Lhakhang – believed to be the oldest Buddhist temple in Bhutan built during the 08th century. Then proceed to the National Museum to immerse yourself in the history and traditions of Bhutan. Some of the most treasured collections of arts, artefacts, textiles, stamps, statues, etc. Explore the town in the evening on foot, and visit handicrafts shops along the street to appreciate Bhutanese craftsmanship and Art works.

Day 7-Departure

Monday - 3rd of March 2025 @

After breakfast at your hotel, your driver will drive you to the airport for your onward journey.
