Trip Description

Saturday - 1st of July 2017

This trip combines two spectacular festivals in the sacred valley of Bumthang in central Bhutan. Nimalung festival takes place in the Nimalung monastery located in Chumeyvalley which is about 15 minutes drive from the road that branches off from the village of Chumey. The temple is secluded in a forest and renders a rather peaceful and a reflective ambience to the festival. The temple was co-founded by DashoGonpoDorji and DoringTrulkuJamyangKunzang, the third mind reincarnation of TertonJigmeLingpa in 1935. The main relic of the two-storied temple is the statue of Guru Rinpoche. The monastery is decorated with murals of the Nyingmapa and Drukpa traditions. There are also paintings of Guru Rinpoche and his disciples, the lineage of TertonPemaLingpa, and several masters affiliated with the monastery. Then the trip takes you to one of the most religious sites in the country- the Kurjeytemple located on the upper reaches of Bumthang valley to witness the KurjeyTsechu. This festival is an important festival for local people of Bumthang and also for the rest of the Bhutanese. Many tourists and Bhutanese come together to witness the colorful festival for blessing and appreciation of the different mask dances. One will not only get the blessings by witnessing the age-old mask dances and traditional Bhutanese dances but also enjoy this unique culture while also enjoying the beauty of Bhutan’s spiritual district. This trip also combines the best of cultural attractions in the touristic sites of Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Trongsa and Bumthang..
