Trip Description
This unique festival is essentially two festivals in one, and takes place in the most beautiful fortress of Bhutan, the Punakha Dzong. The fortress itself is a fine example of greatness of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who united Bhutan in the 17th century and is furthermore justified by the Punakha Dromche that is celebrated to commemorate his victory over marauding Tibetan invasions that took place in during his reign. The highlight of the festival is the enactment of the battle with the Tibetans who were after Rangjung Khasarpani, a sacred relic that was in possession of the Zhabdrung. It is said that the Zhabdrung outwitted the Tibetans by pretending to throw this relic in the Punatsangchu river and the Tibetans lost hope and withdrew. During the enactment of the battle scene, monks and laymen are dressed as ancient warriors on horses who remind us of our history and how this particular victory shaped up modern day Bhutan. The festival can be easily combined with the popular cultural attractions in Paro, Thimphu and Punakha valleys in an 6-8 days itinerary and if you want to experience some community-based tourism, we could also include Phobjikha and Haa valleys to make it into a 10-12 days itinerary.
