Trip Description
Experience one of Bhutan’s most iconic and exciting festivals—the Trongsa Tsechu. Iconic because it is believed to be the oldest and the most sacred festival honoring the 8th century saint Guru Rinpoche. It is customary for every crown prince to be conferred as the Trongsa Penlop (Governor) before enthronement as King as Trongsa is also the origins of the present dynasty of our Monarchs and makes it one of our true Bhutanese heritages. The Dzong (fortress) built in 1648, is a massive structure with many levels, sloping down the contours of the ridge on which it is built. It is in the courtyard of the Trongsa Dzong where all the festivity takes place. Witness the entire funfair a coveted balcony on the corridors of the fortress and encounter thousands of locals gathered from near and far to be part of the festival and be blessed by the sacred performances and religious treasures displayed during the Tsechu, which are otherwise not exposed to the public. Masked and dressed in elaborate silk brocade costumes, dancers depict the triumph of good over evil and the power of compassion to the haunting sounds of trumpets, cymbals and flutes that resounds the air. Combine this festival with the major attractions of western Bhutan, the valley of the Black-Necked Cranes – Phobjikha for guaranteed sightings of these beautiful endangered birds that migrates to Bhutan every winter from the Tibetan and Far East Chinese provinces. If you continue towards Bumthang, it is recommended to take a domestic flight back to Paro in order to reduce the drive times. End the trip with the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Trip duration suggested is around 12-14 nights.
